I am so pumped to see who everyone chooses to win. It's full of great Supporting Actress types. Bat shit crazy, grieving mother, misunderstood hussy, tough broad, and menacing child. Can't wait! :D

Woo hoo!!

Interesting variety of characters but I can't say I really enjoy any of these performances (or films, for that matter... except maybe "Baby Doll")

Would have loved to see the great year for performances, 1968, be profiled. Maybe next year!

How on earth did Mercedes McCambridge get nominated for 'Giant'? I hope she doesn't win this Smackdown.

Slayton said...

Oh, but she deserves to!!!!

Not my favourite Supporting Actress this year, but my favourite of the nominees.

I think Eileen Heckart deserves to win, although I haven't seen 'Baby Doll' yet so I can't be sure. Of the other four I think she's the most deserving. Heckart really transcends a script that tries to turn her into a repetitive one-note character and creates something very emotionally resonant.

Hi Stinkylulu! Are there any plans of doing SAS for a more recent Oscar year? Perhaps from 2001 to 2005? Especially since there has been quite some backlash against winners from those years.

I'm not taking part in the Smackdown, because I'd have to rewatch a couple films that I know aren't available in my town, but my ranking is thus:
1. McCambridge
2. Heckart
3. Dunnock
4. McCormack
5. Malone

i'd love to participate in this one but Baby Doll proves impossible to find. :(

Baby Doll is available on Warner DVD. It was part of the excellent Tenessee Williams box set a few years ago, and you can pick the single DVD up cheap over at Amazon (just search for "Baby Doll" under Movies and TV).

@Slayton: Totally, please do 1968, very good nominees that year. I think Ruth Gordon would be neck in neck with Lynn Carlin.

@chrismic_7: If we do 2003 maybe the panel could correct the win of Renee Zellweger over Shohreh Aghdashloo. Just my $.02 :-)

Hey!

I would like to participate in a smackdown once, but unfortunately the emails I sent you always come back with an error message. Is there another way to contact you?

Hmm. This sounds fun. I've never been part of a blog-a-thon before, as I'm fairly new to blogging. I'm very interested in participating :)
