VOTE: OCTOBER's Supporting Actress Sundays!

As you may have noticed, lovely reader, I have decided to give Supporting Actress Sundays some breathing room this September (so that I might use September's Sundays to catch up on 1966's nominated performances while I also attend to other writing obligations). I have also decided to "push back" my work on 1969 -- the year y'all decided for September -- until November. Why the extra month delay? Well, an accident of timing in 2007, permitted me to profile Judith Anderson's performance in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca on Halloween week and I found that 'twas quite a treat to profile a "horror" performance in such a seasonally appropriate way. So, this year, I'm stacking the voting roster for October with variously haunting and thrilling nominated performances, so that I might make (intentionally) scary Supporting Actressness an annual StinkyLulu/Halloween tradition. So, in anticipation of October thrills, I ask...

What year deserves the focus
for OCTOBER'S month of
Supporting Actress Sundays?
1937: Alice Brady in In Old Chicago, Andrea Leeds in Stage Door, Anne Shirley in Stella Dallas, Claire Trevor in Dead End, May Whitty in Night Must Fall.
1945: Eve Arden in Mildred Pierce, Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce, Angela Lansbury in The Picture of Dorian Gray, Joan Lorring in The Corn Is Green, Anne Revere in National Velvet.
1946: Ethel Barrymore in The Spiral Staircase, Anne Baxter in The Razor's Edge, Lillian Gish in Duel in the Sun, Flora Robson in Saratoga Trunk, Gale Sondergaard in Anna and the King of Siam.
1956: Mildred Dunnock in Baby Doll, Eileen Heckart in The Bad Seed, Dorothy Malone in Written on the Wind, Mercedes McCambridge in Giant, Patty McCormack in The Bad Seed.
1960: Glynis Johns in The Sundowners, Shirley Jones in Elmer Gantry, Shirley Knight in The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, Janet Leigh in Psycho, Mary Ure in Sons and Lovers.
1964: Gladys Cooper in My Fair Lady, Edith Evans in The Chalk Garden, Grayson Hall in The Night of the Iguana, Lila Kedrova in Zorba the Greek, Agnes Moorehead in Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte.
1968: Lynn Carlin in Faces, Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby, Sondra Locke in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Kay Medford in Funny Girl, Estelle Parsons in Rachel, Rachel.
1973: Linda Blair in The Exorcist, Candy Clark in American Graffiti, Madeline Kahn in Paper Moon, Tatum O'Neal in Paper Moon, Sylvia Sidney in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams.

hmmm. some of them don't feel as "horror" as others: Night Must Fall, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Spiral Staircase, Fatal Attraction, even Hush Hush.

The true contenders should be 1956, 1960, 1968, 1973 & 1976. and maybe 64.

But the 60s have had lots of coverage already, so I voted for 1976 because it has an interesting line-up.

I hear ya, Alex. But Rebecca reminded me that creepy "tone" pieces are pretty fun at Halloween time, too.

I'm pulling for 1956 or 1976, myself.

Oh - I've also decided that both of 1987's Annes (Archer and Ramsey) count as "horror" performances, with Anne Ramsey being one of the biggest "monster" performances ever nominated in the category.

'87 is such a weird year. I still need to see Gaby: A True Story (horrible title, not on DVD), but it's a very unusual crowd.
And because I'm an Oscar freak, I've calculated age averages for each year.
And these ladies aren't young. :)Their age average is about 56.6 which makes it #3 in Supporting Actress history.

#1 is 1964 (also in competition this month) with a shocking average of 60.8 years. :P

I sort of guessed that 1976 would win, but I voted for 1964 anyway, just because I'm interested in the performances. 1968 was another possibility (I LOVE RUTH GORDON), but seeing as we are doing 1969 in November I'll save my 1968 vote for next year.

oh, the voting has just started. 1976 hasn't won yet. And I have seen myself (my choices I mean) "snubbed" before twice: 1956 and 1992 [both leading strongly in the beginning].

so I think it any year's game.

Well, the July poll was rigged towards 1949 by, I think, one person from the Philippines.

Before I even read the comments I thought 1976 would be an amazing year to examine. I have to go with '76.

Not to add to your plate, but a poll for "overlooked horror performance" would be fun. However, I might just be saying that because I watched "Scream 2" for the 77th time today and am still consistently surprised by how Courteney Cox rocked that character.

I thought Leigh in "Psycho" would lead to a runaway for '60. How wrong I was!

I voted for '56, as that is a great batch of films, but if '76 does pull through, I cannot wait to see how everyone reacts to Straight's teeny performance that led to her victory.

I kinda like 1956 and 1987 because lulu will get to do one victim and one victimizer's profile.

I'm really interested in 76 & 73, but also interested in 73 because of Madeline (sigh). Carrie may need to be the winner, though, since by collateral supporting damage I would love to hear about Amy Irving, Betty Buckley, Nancy Allen, etc....

And, actually, I've never seen it or the Exorcist, since scary movies are, y'know, really scary.
