Perhaps because I'm peculiar in my own way, I have developed what has become, since 2007, my own Oscar season Razzie ritual in which I will throw myself on the sword and give StinkyLulu's full Supporting Actress treatment to at least ONE of each year's Razzie Nominees. ReplyDeleteCan I just, for a moment, say that it feel like a couple of cheap shots to single out Candice Bergen and Julie White -- two fine actresses who don't exactly have a surplus of amazing roles in Hollywood to choose from. Yes, they were both in abhorrent movies, but Bergen was no worse than anyone else in Bride Wars, and while I didn't see Transformers 2, White wasn't embarrassing herself in the first one. It just seems like an unnecessary low blow.

The Razzie's are mostly about cheap shots, unfortunately -- and they're especially hostile to mature women who might appear to have "lowered" themselves by appearing in a popcorn flick. It's a fanboy-driven snarkfest. (I joined last year and was somewhat appalled.) I wish it was a more legit celebration of the brilliance of badness, but for now it's what I got. (And without it I would never have had the opportunity to profile Julia Ormond in I KNOW WHO KILLED ME, a truly brilliant mess.)

ReplyDeleteAli Larter gets the character utterly, utterly wrong.
ReplyDeleteObsessed is ridiculously bad but I must admit the final 20 minutes are some of the most deliriously entertaining I've ever seen.
Also, technically, Larter is the lead and Beyonce is the supporting actress.
Yeah--the Julie White thing makes me sad, since I love her, and she's brilliant on stage, but I do know it's not your pick.

I know we're not here to challenge the Razzie nominations, but I thought Sienna Miller's performance was the only remotely interesting one in G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. And yes, I saw it in the theater on opening day because I cannot resist Channing Tatum jumproping with his shirt off. I'm only human. Rachel Nichols, on the other hand, was stiff as a board.
ReplyDeleteIt's been my brief experience, Jakey, that such is often the case with the Razzie's. And she might (like Julie White) be a "coaster" in this year's Razzie contest, boosting the sum total of nominations for the films that truly elicited the Razzie-boy ire.
