What about surprise favorites like Leslie Mann, Jennifer Garner, and Tilda Swinton? StinkyLulu's not much for prognosticating, so I'm asking you: who're your picks for Golden Globe nominations? Do tell, in comments, and there may just be a prize in it for the commentator who comes the closest and/or gives the "best" reasoning...

Have at it, lovelies..

  1. A lot of this is judging from NY & LA Critics

Animated I would go with Persepolis which I actually saw last night--it's extraordinary. May go to Ratatouille, but Persepolis is very special. And French.

Amy Adams must be nominated in Musical/Comedy, and I wouldn't be surprised if she wins. From buzz I would expect noms for Jennifer Garner and Ellen Page, who with Adams looks like this year's breakout.

I haven't seen NO Country for Old Men, but just hearing that Beth Grant is in it makes me want her to have a nom. But there's strong like of Kelly MacDonald in No Country, and Amy Ryan's recent tag by Nat'l board of Review and NY Film Critics. And Cate should probably get one for her Dylan turn.

Julie Christie looks like the early Best Actress fave.

I would imagine BP is a race between the Coens and Paul Thomas Anderson. It looks like Daniel Day Lewis and Javier Bardem are the male drama people to beat.

Back to musical, I know WB is pushing Sweeney, and that's basically a lock for musical, Bonham Carter, and Depp. I wouldn't be suprised if he wins, and Adams takes actress. They'll probably give Sasha Baron Cohen a nod for Pirelli. Let's also not forget Marion Cotillard in her stunning Piaf role. The film is okay, but she's incredible, indelible. Pfeiffer is not that in Hairspray, but I pick her as a nom for that for musical/comedy if anyone in that film is.

This one's always fun since there's twice as many noms.

I'd like foreign language film to be "Diving Bell and the Butterfly"

I am really interested in There will Be Blood, as everyone's freaking out about it. DDl looks like the guy to beat for best actor.

  2. So far this year, - remember that I'm saying "so far" though; I've got a lot of viewing still to catch up on - my favourite actresses at the edges have come in the form of:

    -Rose Byrne, Just Buried
-Kelly MacDonald, No Country For Old Men
    -Marley Shelton, Planet Terror
    -Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
    -Tabu, The Namesake
-Laura Vasiliu, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days

But of course, only Swinton and MacDonald stand a chance at getting recognized by the HFPA, and I wouldn't even consider them locks. I'm gonna say that the nominees will be: Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Vanessa Redgrave, Kelly MacDonald and Amy Ryan for now.

  5. I'm going to go down as saying the Globes will start the eventual Oscar list off and go with:

    Cate Blanchett (I'm Not There)
    Jennifer Garner (Juno)
Kelly MacDonald (No Country for Old Men)
    Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone)
    Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)

The SAG's are impossible to predict with this category (they often do wild and sometimes wonderful things here-though I suspect Ronan will make the mix), and I figure that Oscar will follow the HFPA's suit on Ryan, Blanchett, Swinton, and MacDonald. Without seeing Juno, I don't know whether Garner makes it to the Kodak (without her in the mix, Blanchett becomes the biggest "star" using tabloid press standards), but depending upon Juno's reception, I could see the Academy throwing out Garner in favor of the legendary Ms. Ruby Dee.

  6. Lulu ~ BTW, I think the theme for next year's supporting actresses should be the recent eras - the 80s, 90s and 2000s but specifically the 90s and 2000s. The SmackDown hasn't really focused on these years, and there are some *good* years in the mix - 2005, 1999 - and some terrible ones, too - 1997, among others.

  7. Hmm.

Up until now, I've placed something of a moratorium on the last decade. But now that we're mixing things up, I can see doing at least one month where we run a vote for one year from 1997-2005. Not the whole year, mind you, but at least one month...

  8. My predictions go:

    Vanessa Redgrave - Atonement
    Saoirse Ronan - Atonement
    Tilda Swinton - Michael Clyaton
Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone
Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There

Out of those, two make my own personal shortlist, which is:

    Vanessa Redgrave - Atonement
Joan Chen - Lust, Caution (no awards love here, sadly. It's too quiet a performance.)
    Tilda Swinton - Michael Clayton
    Jennifer Garner - Juno
Marisa Tomei - Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.

The only one of mine I'd call likely, other than my above predictions is maybe Jennifer Garner, who is just darling in her role.
