___ Item 6: HELP...
...StinkyLulu build a list of movies featuring three or more supporting actress nominees in the cast. Having screened two three-fers (The Last Picture Show and No Reservations) this past weekend, StinkyLulu got to thinking: which movie has the greatest concentration of Supporting Actress nominees in the cast? So, lovely reader, can you help a Lulu out in comments? I want to limit the list to films with three or more Supporting Actress nominees, which knocks out obvious candidates like Steel Magnolias and Soapdish (Sally Field and Shirley Maclaine only have nominations in Best Actress), and am most interested in films which have a high concentration of Supporting Actress nominees but no Supporting Actress nominations (ala Casa de los Babys). And the person who names the film with the greatest concentration of Supporting Actress Nominees? StinkyLulu will profile actressing at the edges of a film of their choice. Start the listing, lovelies, in comments...

Have at it, lovelies...

This is what I got. The player has eight, but seven of them are cameos so that's obviously cheating. :-p I haven't seen Pret-a-porter recently, so I don't really remember whether most of the actresses in it are in cameos or not. With five actresses each, How to make an American Quilt and Tea with Mussolini are my safest bets.

    The Player
    1. Whoopi Goldberg
    2. Karen Black (cameo)
    3. Cher (cameo)
    4. Teri Garr (cameo)
    5. Anjelica Huston (cameo)
    6. Sally Kellerman (cameo)
    7. Lily Tomlin (cameo)
    8. Julia Roberts (cameo and uncredited)

    Pret-a-porter

  3. Pret A Porter might be it... Most (if not all, including Cher) are fully articulated characters if I'm remembering correctly...

  4. Who is the supporting actress in Sunday, Bloody Sunday? Glenda was nominated for Best Actress for it. Is it Peggy Ashcroft? Like I said-Glenda in the BoyFriend, Glenda in the BoyFriend, you are getting sleepy...sleepy.....

    married to the mob
    pfeiffer, reuhl, cusack

    friends with money

and as soon as maggie gyllenhaal gets nominated you can add:
riding in cars with boys bracco, perez, and gyllenhaal --well, eventually!

and finally a FOUR! and it's a good one since the movie is filled with women and it's quite bad:
the gun in betty lou's handbag
alfre woodard, julianne moore, cathy moriarty and catherine keener

the snake pit olivia dehavilland nominated in lead but no supporting nominations though SA notables are in the cast:
    betsy blair
    beulah bondi

  14. I've got a couple more:

Airport 77 (4): Brenda Vaccaro, Lee Grant, Olivia de Havilland & Kathleen Quinlan

Airport 75 (3): Linda Blair, Nancy Olson, and Karen Black

Nashville (4): Karen Black, Lily Tomlin, Ronee Blakley, and Barbara Harris

Chocolat (3): Lena Olin, Juliette Binoche, and Judi Dench

The First Wives Club (4): Maggie Smith, Goldie Hawn, Maggie Smith, and Marcia Gay Harden (throw in the fact that you have three Best Actress nominees in the form of Stockard Channing Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler, and you have quite the actressexual buffet!)

Girl, Interrupted (4): Angelina Jolie, Wynona Ryder, Vanessa Redgrave, and Whoopi Goldburg

The Bostonians (3): Vanessa Redgrave, Linda Hunt, and Jessica Tandy

Kind Lady (3): Ethel Barrymore, Angela Lansbury, and Betsy Blair

Gaslight (3): Ingrid Bergman, Angela Lansbury, and May Whitty

The Song of Bernadette (3): Anne Revere, Gladys Cooper, and Jennifer Jones

Since You Went Away (3): Hattie McDaniel, Jennnifer Jones, and Agnes Moorehead

Dead End (3): Claire Trevor, Sylvia Sydney, and Marjorie Main (this is the earliest film I could find where there are three actresses with actual speaking parts)

However, if one wanted to go with just appearing on-screen, the earliest film, and the only film I could find where there were three supporting actresses even before the advent of the category was:

Roman Scandals (3): Gloria Stuart, Paulette Goddard, and Jane Darwell

  15. I see now I misunderstood the directive. But I guess "Caged" still qualifies for 5 -Hope Emerson, Agnes Moorehead,Ellen Corby,Jan Sterling and Jane Darwell)

  16. igvrqI was perusing the Woodman's CV since he and Altman have the best SA track record, and saw his new one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497465/. Currently filming with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Patricia Clarkson and Rebecca Hall! And Zak Orth?! Scarlett's the new LouiseDianeMIa, I guess.

  17. This may be cheating but I'd like to mention it just the same, this "film":

    Stage Door Canteen (1943)
    Judith Anderson
    Helen Hayes
    Ethel Waters
    Jane Darwell
    Aline MacMahon
    Dame May Whitty
    Peggy Lee

Played themselves so I guess they're all cameos. =/

  18. Paradise Road has Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett, and Frances McDormand (in a bonkers performance).

On the women-in-wartime theme, John Ford's 7 Women has Margaret Leighton, Flora Robson, and Mildred Dunnock.

And to go for a third, Since You Went Away has Jennifer Jones, Hattie McDaniel, and Agnes Moorehead.

All three movies have a lead nominee that never got a supporting nod (Pauline Collins, Anne Bancroft, and Claudette Colbert).

I lose, but I made myself feel as though I'm good at theme parties.

  19. I can't get more than 3!!

Almost Famous has McDormand; Hudson and Anna Paquin...

The Shipping News has Dench, Blanchett and Moore

    Annnnnnnnnnd, I'm out.

    Somewhat related to this...

Tom Jones holds the record for the most simultaneous supporting actress nominees: Cilento, Redman and Evans. Quite striking since not all of them were exactly deserving (a future smackdown would be great). Also Susannah York was in the film, so it all adds up to 4.

  21. I came up with a few:

    1949's Little Women has

    Mary Astor
    Ellen Corby
    Janet Leigh
    Lucile Watson

    It's a Wonderful Life has

    Beulah Bondi
Ellen Corby (listed as "Miss Davis," but I'll be damned if I can remember her- is she seen at the end, when the whole town shows up to help George?)
    Gloria Grahame
    Donna Reed

    Forever Amber has

Ellen Corby (can we start a "Six Degrees of Ellen Corby" game for Supporting Actress fanatics, right now? She's in a slew of these, and must have worked with every nominated supporting actress)
    Anne Revere
    Jessica Tandy
    Margaret Wycherly

And here's one Stinkylu has mentioned in a prior post, The Opposite Sex:

    Joan Blondell
    Carolyn Jones
    Agnes Moorehead
    Juanita Moore

I found a couple with more than four:

    The Nun's Story has

    Peggy Ashcroft
    Patricia Collinge
    Mildred Dunnock
    Edith Evans
    Barbara O'Neil
    Beatrice Straight

    1960's all-star Pepe has five

    Billie Burke
    Judy Garland
    Shirley Jones
Janet Leigh (Leigh and Jones had good years in 1960, in other roles, of course)
    Donna Reed

Okay, someone has to do it:

    Airport 77 has

    Olivia de Havilland
    Lee Grant
    Kathleen Quinlan
    Brenda Vaccaro

And I'm done for the night (I might try again tomorrow, though)

  22. Is it a cheat to bring up Gone With The Wind? Either way, it has four: De Havilland; McDaniel; Darwell and O'Neil. Could potentially have been five if Viv had ever gone in for supporting roles... :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oops, John T already mentioned Airport 77 before me, sorry.

However, John can add the "Terry Moore" (yes, she was once an Oscar nominee, for 1952's Come Back, Little Sheba) factor to those Since You Went Away and Gaslight lists, as she appears very briefly as a little girl on the train in the first, and as Paula as a child in the later.

Moore also brings the total on Peyton Place, which John also mentioned, to four nominees in the cast (Dunnock, Lange, Moore, Varsi).

Newland updated Tom Jones to include York, and I'll raise him, as Lynn Redgrave also appears in the movie, bringing the new total to five Supporting Actress nominees in the cast.

Others (and I'm sticking with the "no movies including actual SA nominees for said film" formula):

The Chapman Report from 1962 has four

    Jane Fonda
    Glynis Johns
    Cloris Leachman
    Shelley Winters

Continuing down the Shelley Winters wing, I found

    Wives and Lovers

    Martha Hyer
    Janet Leigh
    Shelley Winters

    and Harper

    Lauren Bacall
    Janet Leigh
    Shelley Winters

    Here's some more threes:

    The Court Jester has

    Glynis Johns
    Angela Lansbury
    Mildred Natwick

    The Cincinnati Kid has

    Ann-Margret
    Joan Blondell
    Tuesday Weld

A couple with one of my faves, Piper Laurie:

    1950's Louisa has

    Spring Byington
    Ruth Hussey
    Piper Laurie

Jumping ahead 45 years, The Grass Harp has

    Piper Laurie
    Joan Plowright
    Mary Steenburgen

    I'm done for now.
